John Walker ZL3IB, on 'Amateur Radio and its Fascination for One of its Enthusiastic Users.'An illustrated talk on my hobby of "Amateur radio". It includes both men and women. Radio "hams" have played key roles during both World Wars and in many civil emergencies.

8 Mar:
Mike Corner on Tourism and AviationAn insight into the inter-relationships between the two.

15 Mar:
Nina Mogridge on 'Growing Up in East Africa.'

22 Mar:
Margaret Sweet on 'Asian Incidents: Rats, Revolutions and Religion.'

Course B

There is No Love Sincerer than the Love of Food

The title which comes from from George Bernard Shaw’s Man and Superman has been chosen for no particular reason other than this is a course for those who love food. It looks at food from many angles; from acquisition to regulation, from training to consumption, and historically. There will be two opportunities to eat out, one at ARA where trainees get their practical experience and the other at a Whare Kai Aotearoa.

1 Mar:
Kate Fraser, food writer and former editor of Zest, on 'Food Changes We have Experienced in Our Lifetime.'Growth of the fast food industry, popularity of ethnic foods, cheap foods becoming expensive, awareness of dietry needs, the effect TV food programmes have, etc.

8 Mar:
Ryan Marshall, Mgr. of Food Programmes at ARA, on 'Training and Career Opportunties in the Food and Hospitality Industry.'Associated with this session is a 5 course dinner at the ARA’s Vision Restaurant that will be cooked by students. (See ‘Notices for Members’)

15 Mar:
Tom Lawson, Food and Beverage Manager, University of Canterbury, on 'Behind the Scenes - So You’re a Restaurateur.'Tom will talk about running a restaurant, planning and pricing a menu, sourcing ingredients, food handling and food safety, etc. (There will be an opportunity to eat at the Shilling Club on the UC campus one evening.)

22 Mar:
Stephen Stout, Leader, CCC Food Safety and Health Licensing Team, on 'Rules, Regulations and Big Brother.'Food safety codes and standards, community food, labelling and composition, what’s in our food, food recalls, and more!

29 Mar:
Paul Stewart, Ilam New World Supermarket, on 'Sources of Food with a focus on Supermarkets.'Who supplies the supplier, perishable food, new or fad foods, changes taking place in the industry, dealing with the public….?
